Sudden Weight Gain – Wrong in Your System

Sudden weight gain does not really mean that you became careless of your diet but it may mean that something is wrong in your system. It is important that you see your doctor to know if your weight gain is associated with other medical problems.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder. One of the symptoms of this disease is abnormal weight gain. If you are already overweight and you develop this disease, you will likely develop weight gain. If you are already over weight and you become inflicted with this, you will surely double your existing weight. The weight gain in the upper body especially in the face and neck is obvious if you have polycystic ovary syndrome.

If you have polycystic ovary syndrome, you may also feel other symptoms like weakening of muscles, depression and lethargy. When you have lethargy, you may not have the energy to work out for the next workout, which may even lead to added weight gain.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid gland is responsible for thyroid hormones, which can help in regulating body’s metabolism. Hypothyroidism decreases the rate the body uses energy. This simply means that more energy is stored which may result in weight gain. Lower levels of thyroid hormones may also affect kidneys, which may lead to water and salt retention in your system. All these can cause weight gain.

Cushing’s syndrome

Another hormonal disorder that may cause weight gain is Cushing’s syndrome. With Cushing’s syndrome, there is an increase level of cortisol hormone. Cortisol is produced by adrenal glands. This is normally released by body to respond to stress. However, too much presence of cortisol level in your body is harmful.

Approximately seventy percent of Cushing’s syndrome is not really related to medications but due to pituitary tumor. The pituitary gland releases adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) responsible of the stimulation the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Increased level of ACTH may show that there is a tumor.

One of the effects of Cushing’s syndrome is sudden weight gain. The weight gain is observed in the upper part of the body. The face and neck are visibly round which may result to an apple shaped body.

Kidney Disease

The kidney filters waste products and other fluids in the body. If kidney problems occur, it can affect how the body filters these fluids. Because of its inability to filter, salt and water retention may happen which may lead to sudden weight gain and unexplained swelling.

Medications

Aside from medications, you may also have weight gain if you are taking some medications. Medications that are used to treat heartburn, acid reflux, depression and diabetes are just some of the medications that may cause sudden increase in weight.
